The short answer: most of the ways to stimulate the vagus nerve are free. Slow exhales, cold water on the face, humming, gargling and singing all engage it, and none of them require hardware. A device is a convenience — a repeatable, measurable dose you do not have to think about — not a prerequisite.
If you have not tried the free methods yet, try them first. That is an odd thing to read on a site that sells a device, and it is still the right advice.
What the vagus nerve actually is
The vagus is the tenth cranial nerve and the main highway of the parasympathetic nervous system — the "rest and digest" half of the autonomic system, as opposed to the sympathetic "fight or flight" half. It runs from the brainstem down through the neck and into the chest and abdomen, and it carries information in both directions.
"Stimulating the vagus nerve" in a consumer context means nudging the balance between those two halves toward the parasympathetic side. That is all any of these methods — free or paid — are doing.
Six methods that cost nothing
1. Make the exhale longer than the inhale
The most reliable one. Breathe in for a count of four, out for a count of six or eight. Heart rate rises slightly on the inhale and falls on the exhale, and lengthening the exhale leans on that mechanism directly. Two or three minutes is enough to notice.
2. Cold water on the face
Cold on the face and around the eyes triggers a reflex that slows the heart. A cold splash, or a cold flannel held over the face for thirty seconds, is the practical version. This is the fastest of the free methods and the least pleasant.
3. Humming, singing, chanting
The vagus nerve supplies the muscles of the larynx and pharynx, so anything that vibrates them engages it. Humming for a minute is not a metaphor here — it is a mechanical route.
4. Gargling
Same mechanism, more vigorous. Thirty seconds of properly loud gargling with water, twice a day. It looks ridiculous and it is genuinely one of the standard methods.
5. Slow, extended exhale during exercise recovery
The minutes after hard effort are when the parasympathetic system is trying to take over anyway. Deliberately slowing the breath then, rather than standing around with your hands on your knees, gives it a hand.
6. Doing less at night
Dim light, no screen, no argument at 10pm. Unglamorous, no product attached, and it moves the same needle further than most of the above.
So what does a device add?
Three things, honestly stated.
- A repeatable dose. A device delivers roughly the same stimulation each time. Humming does not, and how well you breathe on a bad day is exactly when you breathe worst.
- Something you will actually do. The free methods are free and most people do not do them. A device on the nightstand that takes four minutes gets used far more often than a breathing protocol you have to remember. That is not a physiological advantage; it is a behavioural one, and it is the real reason devices help people.
- A specific site. Devices target either the cervical branch at the neck or the auricular branch at the ear, transcutaneously. The free methods engage the system more diffusely.
When not to buy one
Genuinely: don't, if any of these apply.
- You have not tried the free methods for a month. Start there. It costs nothing and it tells you whether this whole approach does anything for you.
- You are hoping for something instant. Every method here, hardware included, works on a scale of weeks. If that is not what you are looking for, this is not the category.
- You want it to treat a diagnosed condition. Consumer wellness devices are not treatments and are not cleared as such. That is a conversation with a doctor.
- You know you won't keep it up. The device that lives in a drawer is the most expensive one, whatever it cost.

The main decision is form factor, not brand: a band worn at the neck, a handheld unit held against it, or a clip on the ear.
