Everything that matters, published.
Most belts in this category won’t tell you how many air zones they have, or whether the bladders are single or double. Here are all of ours.
Four dual-layer bladders set across the lumbar curve. They don’t buzz — they squeeze inward and let go, one band at a time, then start again.
Plus off. Start on one. Most people stay there — nothing about this works better for being tighter.
Levels, plus off — and independent of the air, so you can run one without the other.
And the belt shows it. A three-digit readout on the pod, switchable between °C and °F with one key, plus a lock so a chair back can’t change it.
Every edge piped and topstitched, perforated mesh lining, full-width hook-and-loop closure. 1100 g with the extender panel.
It squeezes across the back, not down on it.
The four bladders sit side by side around the lumbar curve and inflate inward, toward each other. Nothing pushes down on the spine — the belt closes in around the waist and then lets go.
Across, not down
The bladders run side by side around the waist, so the squeeze closes in horizontally. It’s the difference between a hug and someone leaning on you.
Two layers per zone
Each of the four zones is a dual-layer bladder rather than a single pocket. It’s in the supplier’s spec sheet, which is exactly why it’s on this page.
Nothing to learn, nothing to pair.
No app, no Bluetooth, no account. A flame for warmth, a wave for vibration, three bubbles for the air — each key steps up a level and then back to off. The clock sets a timer, C/F swaps the units.
Air
Three pressure levels, plus off.
Vibration
Three levels, plus off — run it with the air or without.
Heat
Set the temperature and read it on the belt, in °C or °F.
Four steps, then twenty minutes of nothing.
Wrap it on
Centre the panel on the small of your back and pull the closure until it’s snug — firm enough that it doesn’t ride up when you stand. The extender panel goes on first if you need more room.
Start with the heat
Press the flame and set a temperature you’d happily sit in for twenty minutes. Warmth is the part you’ll feel first, and it’s the part with the strongest evidence behind it.
Add the air
Press the bubbles. Level one is a slow squeeze and release across the four zones. Give it a fortnight on level one before you go looking for level three.
Set the timer, then forget it
The clock key sets the session. Sit down, drive, work through the afternoon. The lock stops the keys changing when you lean back into a chair.
What the research on heat, massage and support for low backs actually shows
Figures reflect Cochrane systematic reviews of superficial heat and cold for low back pain, and of massage for low back pain. The evidence for lumbar supports and for massage is weaker and less consistent than the evidence for heat, and we’d rather say so than round it up. Individual results vary. Holtrow Press is a wellness device — it is not a medical treatment and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
This one runs on two clocks.
The heat is immediate — you’ll feel it inside ten minutes, and that isn’t a placebo, it’s the part the trials actually measure. The compression is the slow one. It’s a habit, like everything that works on a stiff back, and habits take a fortnight before you notice they changed something. Anyone selling you a first-session miracle is selling you a return label. Here’s the honest split, and the reason our guarantee runs thirty days rather than seven.
The only one in the row that does all three.
This category runs from £20 heat pads to $269 recovery wraps. The premium end still doesn’t do air compression.

Thirty days, because a fortnight is the point.
A week isn’t long enough to judge a device whose second half is a habit. Wear it through a month of desk days and long drives. If your back feels the same at the end of it, send it back and we’ll refund it. No hoops, no hard feelings.
In the box
The things people ask before buying
Will it fit me?
It closes anywhere along a full-width hook-and-loop panel rather than at fixed notches, and there’s a separate extender panel in the box for a wider waist. We haven’t printed a circumference range because our manufacturer hasn’t given us one we’d stand behind, and inventing one is how people end up with a belt that doesn’t close. If it doesn’t fit you comfortably, that is exactly what the thirty days are for.
How hot does it get?
As hot as you set it. The pod has a three-digit readout and a C/F key, so you pick a temperature and can see it rather than guessing between “low” and “high”. It’s a warming belt, not something that bakes you — and the heat runs on its own if you want warmth without the massage.
Is it noisy?
There’s a small air pump in the pod, so the compression function is audible — a soft, repeated pumping while the zones fill and release. Heat on its own is silent, and vibration is close to it. Worth knowing before you wear it through a quiet meeting.
Does the squeeze hurt?
It shouldn’t. Level one is a slow inflate and release, and it feels strange for the first minute or two mostly because nothing else does that. If a level feels like something you’re bracing against, come down one. Nothing about this works better for being tighter.
Can I wear it over clothes?
Yes, and most people do — over a t-shirt is the usual way. Against skin gets you the warmth faster; over a jumper it’ll take longer to come through. The air compression works the same either way.
Can I sleep in it?
We’d rather you didn’t. There’s a timer key on the pod, but we haven’t confirmed an automatic cut-off with the manufacturer, so we’re not going to tell you it’s safe to fall asleep wearing it. Use it awake, set the timer, take it off afterwards.
Can I use it on my stomach, or somewhere else?
The shape is cut for a lower back, and that’s where the four zones line up with the lumbar curve. Plenty of people wear it round the abdomen and it works fine — we just won’t pretend it was designed for that.
Is there anyone who shouldn’t use it?
Don’t use it over broken skin, a rash, or anywhere sensation is reduced. If you’re pregnant, have a pacemaker or another implanted device, have diabetes or neuropathy affecting feeling in the skin, are being treated for a blood clot, or have had recent abdominal or spinal surgery, ask your doctor first. And if a back is getting worse rather than stiffer — particularly with pain down a leg, numbness, or any change in bladder control — that needs seeing about, not a belt.
Twenty minutes. Same chair. Most days.
Four air zones, warmth you can actually read, and thirty days to decide.
